Blog 6: "Eleanor Rigby"
This week I listened to "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles. I was surprised to not recognize this song, but I enjoyed it a great deal. I enjoyed how the song just started immediately, especially because most songs even today have an introduction that is instrumental in some form or builds up to the vocals. I also loved the use of string instruments! I am very partial to orchestra because I played in one for six years and I think it adds a steady beat to the song. The violin and cello really have heavy influence in the song and the violin and viola have some nice staccato moments while the cello plays a more melodic rhythm on top. The song is quite upbeat throughout and feels quicker paced and almost anxious. The string instruments create this feel and I think it just adds to the lyrics. The string instruments are also important in building the story as they go quieter as the Beatles are singing but get louder as the song progresses. It adds to the question “All the lonely people, where do they all belong?” and makes the question more urgent. “I look at all the lonely people” is also the hook of the song and plays in between the specific stories of lonely individuals.
I also found this interesting, there is a statue that was actually donated in tribute to the Beatles!

I really enjoyed reading your take on the song. You really know a lot about instruments and can hear all the rolls it takes in the song! I do enjoy the song and its beauty for sure. I also do like how there is no introduction and it just jumps right into the song. That is a great thing I think. I also was really surprised to see that statue but that is seriously so cool!
ReplyDeleteI also like that the song starts immediately. I think that makes it unique, because like you stated normally there is instrumental music before the singing starts. I also thought that your thoughts on the string instruments was really interesting. It is evident that you know a lot about the orchestra.
ReplyDeleteI've never hear of this song until this class so thanks for sharing about this! I think that the Beatles are amazing and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to listen to this song! I love how it gets straight to the point. I like the lyrics of this song too! It made it way more fun to read about.
