Blog 5 "Charlie Brown"

This week I listened to the song "Charlie Brown" by the Coasters. This was a very fun and upbeat song. I felt like I could groove to this song and that it would be a fun fast paced song to dance to. It is a nice mix of Doo-wop, R&B and pop, and I can tell by the tone of the voices that black people are singing, and I think it adds a great deal of character to the song. Having only one person sing the part that says “Why’s everybody always picking on me” really made the use of first person unique and set it apart from the rest of the song.

The saxophone playing adds an exhilarating somewhat crazy feel to the song and the singing on time with the beat of the piano (or whatever it is) before they say Charlie Brown makes me want to tap my foot to it. The lyrics and story the song tells makes the pace of the song even better as it calls Charlie Brown a clown and the song feels a little amusing to me. With everything going on in the song, I felt like by the time the it ended I was waiting for more as well.

  1. Woah, this song was a fun one! There was definitely a lot going on. The saxophone really makes the song feel wild and crazy. I agree that calling Charlie Brown is what ties the lyrics to the rest of the song. It gives it a sort of novelty vibe and the crazy saxophone bits really add to it. Good choice!

  2. First of all, your blog is literally so cute!
I like how you said how fun the song was because now I want to go listen to it! I like how you brought in the part about the saxophone because saxophones really do make songs a lot more fun and upbeat. Looking up the lyrics to the song did make me realize how interesting it is, but Charlie Brown does help it tie together! Awesome job!

  3. Hi Lauren! :) This post is so enjoyable to read! After reading your post and reflecting on the facts behind this song, I remembered that I do like that it has a very cultural feel to it. I like that you emphasized that you are able to tell it's performed by African-American men. As you said, when the song ends, you want more... I loved that I didn't get bored of the song. Love it, Lauren!
